Retriever Rules

I found some old notes from when Terri Pardee and I did TRAINING CAMPS on The Pardees’ property in Concord Michigan.

 Purpose of RETRIEVER CAMP

Help you and your dog become a team and work in sync with each other

Train, Don’t Complain: The harder you train, the luckier you get. ****

Dog training is an art, Not a science

There are NO set rules: You must be capable of interpreting why the dog is doing that behavior and then be able to communicate to the dog

A      Choosing the right pup for you

 1.  Litter Selection

2.  Pedigree

3.  Accomplishments of Sire and Dam (important to see them training and Competing )  Some dogs receive titles, but if I am not excited about their attitude in training and competing, they are not on my list of potential Parents.

4.  How Breeder raises the pups: Pups should have early stimulation exercises. placed in new home between 7 and 8 weeks

B     Selection of individual pup

 1.  Important to take into consideration your goals, lifestyle, training style, and personality. The “pick of the litter” might not be the best pup for you

2.  Evaluate temperament, desire to retrieve, and overall structure. A working dog must have sound structure. Beware of the myth that the dominant pup is the best pup.
