Tips for Flying with Your Puppy

First off all, Congrats on your Topbrass puppy.

Let me share with you some of what I have learned while flying to pick up my Topbrass pups. Whether a direct flight or multi segment, the best success builds from planning. (I fly from Atlanta so these notes are based on Delta Airlines as my carrier.)

Things to do early:

Secure an airline approved pet carrier. Chewy has a Delta approved carrier that I use. It’s vented, has both top and front entry and side pockets for misc puppy stuff. You will need carrier dimensions as well as approximate puppy weight when booking your airline ticket. I send my carrier to the breeder early so there is time for puppy to acclimate early to carrier.

Book your plane ticket to coordinate with breeder. To book with Delta you must talk to them directly to set up puppy traveling with you on the return flight. Any fees for puppy travel are paid at the airport on your return flight. Delta requires a health certificate for puppy which the breeder supplies. Allow time for this extra step on your return flight.

I suggest you research airports on outbound as well as inbound for pet areas, gate locations, etc. If you are changing planes allow yourself time to air your puppy before and between flights and as soon as you can upon arrival. I have someone pick me up at baggage claim rather than trek to parking.

A personal preference:

I like to fly inbound comfort plus and back home first class. I prefer not to deal with baggage claim so I pack light. I check no baggage, just carry a back pack and a fold up luggage carrier (useful for return with puppy carrier thru airports, to and from gates and stops at pet airing areas as well as potential car rental return).

Puppy travel notes:

Airport security will require you to remove puppy from carrier and carry him/her thru screening where they will test your hands.

Puppy will ride under the seat in front of you as your carry on AND must remain in carrier for the flight. I put my backpack and luggage carrier overhead. Puppy most likely will sleep during the flight.

I pack a collapsible water bowl, some puppy food from the breeder is useful if puppy gets restless on the trip, a few puppy pads, toys, blanket or towel with some mamma scent, a couple of puppy poop bags, napkins or paper towels, wipes for yourself, small puppy collar and leash. Most of this can be sent ahead with carrier and if you choose to stay overnight (I have stayed close to the airport and taken a hotel shuttle) these items will certainly come in handy.

Again, do your research and make your plans early. Best wishes for a successful trip.
